Project Background

Under the background of "double control of energy consumption" and "double carbon", energy-saving policies are gradually tightening, business demand is growing, and many existing data centers are facing urgent pressure for energy-saving transformation. Tongle IDC computer room of China Unicom Shenzhen Branch, located in Shenzhen, Guangdong, has a net hosting area of ​​more than 10,000 square meters and more than 1,000 cabinets. It is one of the important IDC computer rooms in Shenzhen. Tongle computer room has been in operation for more than ten years. Various infrastructures are aging, energy efficiency is low, PUE is close to 1.8, and energy consumption pressure is becoming more and more serious; at the same time, the power density of the cabinet is less than 3kW, which is difficult to cope with business growth and competitive pressure. Shenzhen Unicom decided to immediately launch the computer room energy-saving transformation project, reduce the computer room PUE target to 1.3, and require uninterrupted business operation during the transformation process.

Key Challenges

The energy-saving renovation project of Shenzhen Unicom Tongle computer room is not limited to equipment replacement, but involves the overall renovation of multiple systems, including high and low voltage power distribution, HVAC, UPS, dynamic environment monitoring and air conditioning group control systems, which requires comprehensive planning and design, multi-product delivery and overall construction, and puts forward strict requirements on the overall delivery capability. In addition, the building space layout of the computer room is small, close to residential areas, and the external space is also very limited, which increases the difficulty of construction.

Solution

On-site survey, diagnostic analysis, and customization

According to the coexistence of Feng Shui on site in the computer room air-conditioning system, the original air-cooled fixed-frequency system was transformed into a variable-frequency system, and the chilled water system adopted a high-efficiency magnetic levitation host plus an outdoor cooling tower; the inlet and return air/water temperatures were increased to increase the utilization rate of natural cooling sources; a dynamic online UPS system was used for capacity expansion; AI combined with manual tuning was used to deal with hot spots and airflow organization optimization problems after the power density was increased.

Because the computer room is close to the residential area and the space is very limited, the cold storage tank needs to be hoisted across the building and the layout of the original outdoor condenser on the top floor of the data center needs to be optimized; in order to ensure the uninterrupted operation of the computer room business, the water system needs to be cut over online; the distribution room and the cold water host computer room have limited height, which makes the construction difficult. Vertiv's professional energy-saving renovation engineering team, with the help of advanced digital tools, through BIM modeling and laser precision positioning, ensured the smooth delivery of the project under the unfavorable conditions of limited space. During the entire project implementation, the water system and the electrical system were transformed online 5 times, and the business was not interrupted.
