During MWC25 Barcelona, IDATE, a renowned European analyst organization, held a green all-optical network forum with the theme of “AI-centric all-optical network to enable new business growth”. More than 200 industry leaders and experts from European telecom regulators, FTTH Council, operators, equipment vendors, etc. discussed the opportunities and challenges of all-optical networks in the AI era, and unanimously agreed that F5G-A all-optical network is the best choice for operators to provide ubiquitous 10Gbps access, deterministic user experience, and high-quality in-counting and in-computing in the AI era, and that the industry is ushering in a new round of historical opportunities.
[Barcelona, Spain, March 7, 2025] During MWC25 Barcelona, IDATE, a renowned European analyst organization, held a green all-optical network forum with the theme of “AI-centric all-optical network to enable new business growth”. More than 200 industry leaders and experts from European telecom regulators, FTTH Council, operators, equipment vendors, etc. discussed the opportunities and challenges of all-optical networks in the AI era, and unanimously agreed that F5G-A all-optical network is the best choice for operators to provide ubiquitous 10Gbps access, deterministic user experience, and high-quality in-counting and in-computing in the AI era, which is ushering in a new round of historical opportunities for the industry.
Jean-Luc Lemmens, CEO of IDATE, said that the driving force for fiber optic network deployment is gradually changing from bandwidth upgrade to bandwidth upgrade + AI service experience. 10G PON has become mainstream in Europe, and the average ARPU growth of operators is up to 10% through subscriber package upgrade and other means. At the same time FTTR is also being accepted by more and more European operators, showing high growth.

Pioneering operators from MasOrange (Spain), Zain (Saudi Arabia), Turkcell (Turkey), and CTM (Macau) shared their digital and intelligent transformation strategies, highlighting the importance of “strengthening computing with network and empowering network with intelligence”, and gradually expanding business boundaries based on network advantages. The topics covered a full range of network innovation practices such as FTTR, 10G/50G PON, OTN to Edge, end-to-end OXC, 400G/800G, intelligent management and control platforms, as well as business innovations such as smart home based on FTTR+X, and arithmetic leased line based on 1ms metro optical network. China Unicom shared its “Unicom Smart Home Happiness at Home” business development concept and its world-leading FTTR whole-house optical broadband business practice. China Unicom continues to expand smart services such as Smart Link, Smart Control, Smart Enjoyment, Smart Security, etc., and is committed to building an open and shared smart home ecosystem, joining hands with all parties to build the Unicom Smart Home ecosystem, and exploring a clear path for the entire industry in the construction of the home network and development of the Smart Home business.
Jin Zhiguo, vice president of Huawei's optical product line, delivered a keynote speech titled “Building an AI-centric F5G-A All-Optical Network for Winning the Intelligent Era” and released four innovative solutions. He said that Huawei has joined hands with operators to continue innovating, launching a new generation of iFTTR, serialized 50G PON OLT products, DC-based OTN platforms, and intelligent management and control systems based on AI, to help operators build AI-centric F5G-A all-optical networks and win the Smart Era together.
